The simplicity of do-it-yourself, on-demand printing allows authors to take responsibility for the formatting and design of their books and get them on sale relatively quickly. When you commit to writing a book, you have the opportunity to share your voice with readers. When you are responsible for publishing and marketing your work, you need to move forward in a way that gets people to see your sales page. 1) How much time will I spend on the process? Self-publishing a novel can be full-time or part-time – you set your schedule and set the hours needed. The same goes for marketing. How will you divide your time between social media, blogs, and network reviews and events?

2) Who will edit the book? You might think, because you have years of writing and literary experience, that you are qualified to write your own. You may have edited well for others, but when it comes to your own work, you run the risk of letting your ego get in the way. It's important to hire an editor to work with you to make sure your work is polished and flawless, the characters stay consistent, and the story makes sense. 3) Who will design the cover? Readers really judge a book by its cover, and it's often the cover and title that made the reader buy in the first place. 4) What is the target audience? Who will be reading your book – men, women, teenagers? If your book is non-fiction, is there a specific market that would be more attractive – music lovers, people from a certain geographic area, people of a certain faith or religion? How a book is marketed depends on the demographics of your intended readership, so get to know your audience.

5) How to sell books? You may be planning to sell through Amazon.com and other retailers, but what else do you have planned? Will you be selling through your website or social accounts? Do you have potential customers for book signings and book events?
